About
This map explores the childhood vaccination rate and children’s population in ten African cities. It shows the present and past total number of children and the DPT vaccination rate in one-square kilometer grids.
Users can easily examine the outcome of efforts to vaccinate children in areas with considerable population growth. These two components are depicted by the color and height of cell blocks, respectively.
Users can zoom-in, zoom-out, and rotate the map to view the geographic pattern from multiple angles. Additionally, users can easily navigate across cities by selecting a city from the menu on the left side of the application.
Methodology
The data powering these maps comes from the Fraym platform. Fraym was built to help fast-growing companies and development organizations succeed in Africa. Its best-in-class product weaves together survey data and satellite imagery to provide hyper-local population-based information across Africa.
To create spatial layers of vaccination coverage, Fraym used machine learning to combine survey coverage data at the cluster level with satellite imagery to identify spatial relationships and predict patterns at a hyper-local scale.
The inputs used for creating these layers were collected from USAID, UNICEF, World Bank, USGS and several other data providers. Vaccination rates were calculated to reflect the proportion of children under the age of five who have received DPT3.
